DEPARTMENT OF CARDIOLOGY

Chengalpattu Medical College was started in the year 1965. It is one of the oldest medical college in the State of Tamilnadu and is strategically located at the entrance to the State capital.

The Department of Cardiology was started in the year 1987. For nearly 25 years, it was functioning as an outpatient setup with no separate ward and ICU facilities. The Department was slowly expanded with the posts of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professors and senior resident. Cathlab was started in October 2018, the first set of post graduates joined in the year 2019.

The department now boasts of a full-fledged ICU, male and female wards, full blown OP, with facilities like ECG, Echo, TMT, Holter and cathlab.

3.      For AN patients cardiac screening done in all days.

4.      In Cardiology OPD, we have two ECHO machines and two ECG machines for the benefit of OP patients.

5.      TMT done for borderline risk patients on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

6.     Holter is fixed in the OPD for needy patients.

On an average, we have 75000-1,00,000 patients attending our new and old OPD every year.

We also do 20,000-25,000 echocardiographies every year.

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY:

Separate dedicated echocardiography machines are available in Cardiology OPD, ICCU, IMCU, TAEI ward, Labour ward ICU, paediatric ICU and neonatal ICU.

ECHO IN OPD

Echo is done on all days in the OPD. The footfall is around 100-200 cases per day. We have two dedicated echo machines in the OPD for this purpose with adult and paediatric probes

ECHO IN ICCU

We have an echocardiography machine in our ICCU to monitor the condition and progress of all our sick patients on a daily basis.

ECHO IN IMCU

We do echocardiography for patients admitted in medical ICU, who need cardiac evaluation and monitoring, using a separate echo machine, which is available for this purpose.

ECHO IN LABOUR WARD ICU

We also have an echo machine with adult probe in the labour ward ICU, so that echo for needy patients may be done then and there, 24x7, without the need for shifting sick patients to the Department of Cardiology.

ECHO IN PICU

We do have an echocardiography machine with paediatric probe in the paediatric ICU, for screening and managing children admitted with cardiac ailment and conditions like scorpion sting, myocarditis, infective endocarditis etc.

ECHO IN NICU

A separate echocardiography machine is available in neonatal ICU with neonatal probe, where we screen new born with congenital heart diseases.

ECHO IN TAEI WARD

We do have an echo machine in the TAEI – emergency department for immediate screening of patients who present in the red and yellow zone, so as to avoid time delay in diagnosing acute cardiac conditions.

ECHO IN CARDIOLOGY WARD

In Cardiology ward, we are having one ECHO machine for emergency bedside echos and for follow Up of patients

TMT

TMT done for borderline risk patients on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

ICCU

1.      We are equipped with 10 bedded ICCU with oxygen supply ,infusion pump ,defibrillator ,ventilators and cardiac monitors with trained staff nurses

2.      In ICCU we have two ECG machines one ECHO machine for emergency bedside echos and for follow up

3.      We also have temporary pacemaker kits and pericardiocentesis kits in the ICCU.

WARDS

We have a 30 bedded fully equipped male and female wards, to treat patients who have recovered from the acute phase and manage clinically stable patients. Each ward also has an ECG machine, monitors, oxygen supply, infusion pump, defibrillator and an emergency crash cart and a ventilator.

CATH LAB

1.         Cath lab is functioning on all week days

2.         We do diagnostic angiographies and angioplasties as a routine

3.         On an average, 80 CAG, 20 PTCA and 15 PHARMACOINVASIVE procedures are being done every month.

4.         We also focus on Pharmacoinvasive procedures with adhoc stenting and primary angioplasties.

5.         We do temporary and permanent pacemaker implantation procedures

We have nearly done 2000 cases in our cathlab as on date.

POST CATH ICU CARE

We have a 6 bedded fully equipped post cath ICU adjoining our cathlab for shifting and monitoring our patients for recovery after the cath procedures.

TAEI WARD

1.      We provide 24/7 emergency cardiac care facilities in TAEI ward. Acute myocardial infarction patients are managed immediately with ECG , ECHO followed by thrombolysis under continuous cardiac monitoring.

2.      Patient with acute heart failure are managed with ventilator support and ionotropes with cardiac monitoring in TAEI ward.

3.      Patients who present with heart blocks due to cardiac causes and non-cardiac causes like poisoning due to oleander seeds, receive immediate temporary pacemaker insertion.

4.      Patient presented with life threatening arrhythmias like VT, wide and narrow complex tachycardias are managed by pharmacological means as well as electrical defibrillation).

5.      Patients who come with cardiac tamponade are diagnosed immediately with the echocardiography machine in the TAEI ward, and pericardiocentesis is being done as early as possible.

All such procedures in the TAEI Emergency department and ICCU are being done by the post-graduates under the supervision of senior faculty.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:

We have regular classes for our post-graduates on all working days from 12-2.00 pm.

We have grand rounds and extended class hours on Saturdays.

Medicine PGs are being posted for specialty posting in Cardiology on rotation basis and they also actively take part in academic activities of the department.

CMEs are being conducted regularly for the benefit of the post graduates.

Some of them include:

1.      CME on heart failure                                - 01/09/2020

2.      CME on Dyslipidemia                              - 08/10/2021

3.      CME on PCI in abnormal coronary ostia  - 01/01/2022

4.      Bifurcation stenting CME and workshop – 10/03/2022

5.      Upcoming CME on Cardiology updates  - 23/07/2022

We also conduct special workshops on advanced cardiac care including interventional training for post-graduates.

Workshop with wet model on “Techniques on bifurcation stenting”

Our post-graduates also take part in various conferences and present papers, posters and do oral presentations.

They have won special accolades and prizes in such conferences.

We also encourage them to take part in research activities.

We recently celebrated our World Heart Day in September 2021 with CMEs, rallies and special campaigns. It was a well-attended successful celebration.

The Department of Cardiology, Chengalpattu Medical College is a relatively young department, which has improved leaps and bounds over a short span of time.

The dedication and hard-work of all our faculty and staff holds promise to take the Department to great heights in teaching and treating.
