The department was run in the old casualty block since the inception of the medical college hospital. An exclusive eye block was constructed under NPCB and commissioned in 2000. It consists of OP rooms, 30-bedded wards, and operation theatre along with rooms for the faculty and special equipments and lecture /clinical discussion room for students. The OT has 2 wings- one for main surgeries and another for septic surgeries.

Slit lamp biomicroscopes-3 nos
Applanation tonometry-2 nos
Automated perimetry: Humphrey-1 no.
Auto refractometer/ keratometer- 1 no.
A-scan biometry- 1 no.
ARGON green LASER-1 no.
YAG LASER- 1 no.
Special clinics like glaucoma, cornea , retina and oculoplasty are conducted regularly with the available infrastructure.

Operating microscopes - 2 nos
Phacoemulsifier units - 2 nos
Average OPD attendance:
Total no. of patients- 130 to 150/day
Every month about 200 cases are referred from other departments for eye check-up.
Case admissions per year : about 800
Average bed occupancy per day: 85%
Major cases (including cataract/IOL and glaucoma) – about 750/year
Minor cases- about 400/year
All cataract patients undergo IOL surgeries free of cost.
Teaching imparted for medical students (MBBS), nursing students (Diploma and B.Sc ) and paramedical students.
Lectures are conducted with power point presentation.
Interesting cases are presented in the clinical society meetings.
Symposia are conducted with active participation of students.
Cataract cases selected by PMOAs of 10 blocks of Kancheepuram district are admitted for surgery.
CHIEF MINISTER’S HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME:
Under this scheme, glaucoma surgeries, paediatric cataract surgery and LASER photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy are being performed.
